NetScout's nGenius Solution Provides UMB with Application Awareness for Network Troubleshooting, Forecasting and Planning

WESTFORD, Mass., June 20, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- NetScout Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT), today announced that UMB Bank is using its nGenius(R) Performance Management System to manage application and network performance throughout a major network upgrade for a Voice over IP (VoIP) implementation. The nGenius Solution provides UMB Bank with detailed application visibility and historical trending analysis for accurate planning of network and application rollouts, along with sophisticated troubleshooting capabilities to reduce or eliminate the risk of network and application degradations.

Headquartered in Kansas City, UMB Bank is a multi-bank holding company that offers complete banking and related financial services to both individual and business customers. With 150 banking centers throughout six states and approximately 3,500 employees, UMB needs to protect the performance of customer financial record-keeping applications as well as the quality of its new VoIP infrastructure project. In 2004, the bank's IT staff carried out a major network redesign to prepare for a gradual transition to VoIP telephony services. To ensure the continual optimum performance of its critical applications during the network upgrade and high call quality after the IP telephony implementation, UMB looked to NetScout's nGenius Performance Management System.

"Changing our network architecture presented several challenges, including how to effectively manage current network needs and demands that were just around the corner," said Bill Taylor, assistant vice president and manager of network services at UMB Bank. "Our previous tools had nowhere near the granularity required for managing continual performance. NetScout's nGenius System was the only solution we evaluated that met this challenge by providing detailed visibility into our current application performance and bandwidth utilization as well as by helping us forecast what we could expect down the road."

The nGenius Solution has been instrumental in UMB's execution of long-term strategy to migrate its phone system onto a converged VoIP network. Prior to deploying any VoIP equipment, UMB used the nGenius Solution to perform an essential network audit to determine bandwidth utilization and the composition of network traffic, identify all existing applications and profile its performance, and characterize other performance requirements for voice services. Leveraging nGenius' NewsPaper Reports for historical trend information, UMB was able to forecast LAN and WAN bandwidth demand. UMB also used the nGenius System during the key task of establishing Quality of Service (QoS) classes on its converging network to validate that voice and revenue impacting applications received priority treatment over less time-sensitive applications such as email, Web traffic or database synchronizations. The CDM(TM) Port feature of the nGenius System has also provided UMB unique, flexible recognition of custom applications including its important teller and finance programs, differentiating NetScout from other offerings and enabling an easy integration into the bank's environment.

"As companies undergo significant network changes and upgrades, such as migrating to VoIP, the ability to view granular historical and real-time application and network performance information is essential," said Jim Frey, vice president of marketing at NetScout Systems. "UMB's use of the nGenius Performance Management System is a great example of how innovative enterprises can take a more proactive role in the management of their overall application and network performance and make informed, strategic decisions about network resource allocation and overall IT spending. UMB is also one of a growing number of companies who extend the value of their investment in the nGenius Solution beyond the networking staff to help improve the productivity across the IT organization, assisting application groups with new roll-outs, security groups with forensic analysis, and IT executives with strategic resource planning."
