Leading Engineering Firm Selects NETSCOUT Systems to Manage its Wide Area Network

Worldwide to Improve Application Response Time --

WESTFORD, Mass., Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- NetScout Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT) today announced that CH2M HILL, one of the nation's largest environmental engineering firms, has selected NetScout to optimize application performance and control bandwidth costs across its Wide Area Network (WAN).

By using NetScout's infrastructure performance management technology, CH2M HILL can increase visibility into traffic patterns and more accurately assess bandwidth consumption of applications traversing its frame relay network. As a result, the performance of important engineering applications can be better managed for availability to end users alongside competing applications that are needed by internal users to exchange, produce and transmit customer proposals.

CH2M HILL's frame relay network extends throughout six countries and 98 locations, supporting more than 7,000 users from its Denver, Colorado headquarters. The firm has deployed NetScout's real-time monitoring and capacity planning solutions in conjunction with a suite of NetScout's application-aware, high speed probes to support these geographically dispersed locations.

"Our enterprise WAN is key to the way we work and communicate with our clients," said Lisa Hamilton, network and telecommunications manager for CH2M HILL. "By collecting data from NetScout's probes we can generate daily reports on bandwidth utilization by application for each of our operating regions. With this in-depth information we can then make more informed business decisions regarding the performance of our networks."

CH2M HILL uses NetScout's performance management system to identify bandwidth utilization on its frame relay circuits to remote sites; to perform tighter calculations of bandwidth upgrades needed in those locations; and to "rule out" the WAN as the bottleneck for performance issues. These reporting tools also help determine how an upgrade, in turn, may impact service level agreements.

"A perceived lack of available bandwidth in the WAN often masks less obvious, extremely important factors influencing the delivery of information to end users. These factors become more prevalent and costly as the size and complexity of the network grows. They may include, for example, application design issues that render an application unresponsive or cause bandwidth contention between applications," said Michael Szabados, vice president of marketing, NetScout Systems. "By deploying our solutions, the network operations manager can identify and distinguish the true source of problems and increase quality of service through improved troubleshooting and proactive measures."
