nGenius Speeds Network Performance As Reed Elsevier Rolls Out E-commerce Sites by the Hundreds

WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2000-- NetScout(R) Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTCT) today announced that world leading publisher Reed Elsevier has selected NetScout's nGenius(TM) e-business performance management system to ensure fast application and Web site response times for its on-line publications. As Reed Elsevier migrates its print publications to the Web, the company is using the nGenius system to manage network-wide bandwidth requirements and to improve the performance of its network assets.

Reed Elsevier selected the NetScout solution during the commencement of its e-commerce roll-out last December. With plans to deploy approximately 300 Web sites in a 12-month time frame, the company needed a solution that would scale while providing better control of network performance. The company selected NetScout to establish real-time network monitoring and troubleshooting to improve capacity planning and to better manage the pressure of both internal and Internet traffic.

"In our network, we're required to address the needs of more than 2,000 internal users - as well as our subscribing customers accessing their content on each of our publication sites worldwide," said Glenn Osborne, manager of network services for international publishing, Reed Elsevier. "In all cases, the goal is simple - deliver a network that minimizes downtime internally while maximizing uptime externally. nGenius gives us specifics on the kinds of protocols being used over the network and whether our Internet connection is large enough to sustain the level of traffic on the site. Our system-wide performance has been increased by 30% since implementing NetScout technology."

"We are delighted that the nGenius system has received such welcome response from customers like Reed Elsevier as they migrate to an on-line business model," said Michael Szabados, vice president of marketing, NetScout Systems. "Successful e-business not only depends on the speed of the Web site, but also the performance of the applications in the back office - such as ERP systems, order entry, and CRM applications. nGenius tracks the performance of the entire network, optimizing the Internet experience of internal and external users."

The nGenius system is the industry's first real-time, system-wide performance management solution for visibility and control of both the front and back-office network. The system is comprised of the nGenius Performance Monitor(TM), nGenius Traffic Monitor(TM), nGenius Server(TM) and the nGenius Probe(TM). These products provide the network analysis and reporting solutions needed to track Internet traffic, application response times, monitor denial of service attacks, anticipate network bandwidth requirements and troubleshoot network problems before slowdowns occur.
