Infrastructure Business Decisions

WESTFORD, Mass., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NetScout Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT), the leading provider of network performance management solutions, today announced that American Tower Corporation has selected NetScout's nGenius Performance Management System to gain system-wide insight into the business application flows and behavior of its wide area enterprise network. In order to maximize returns for a planned deployment of critical enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications and to more tightly manage the additional network infrastructure investment required to support them in the future, the company chose to implement NetScout's nGenius Performance Management System. The comprehensive information generated by nGenius will enable American Tower to produce a highly-accurate assessment of the factors driving utilization and performance system-wide, plan resource needs for its ERP applications and optimize performance of its total network and applications going forward.

American Tower is a leading provider of wireless communications towers and equipment in the Western hemisphere; it operates more than 14,000 sites across North America that provide local access for customers of major wireless, telecommunications and broadcast companies. Its enterprise network enables employees to design, deploy, manage and maintain optimal service from these sites year-round.

To support the large ERP deployment efficiently, George Duguay, senior network engineer for American Tower, knew that a comprehensive and deep analysis of network behavior would be required. An accurate, system-wide picture of asset utilization, network and application performance issues, user trends and other conditions, would be vital to fully understand potential cost and performance issues. Duguay also wanted to assure that the network would meet the high performance standards set for the increased business services being delivered.

"The information generated by nGenius will enable us to realize an immediate payback and significant return on investment," said Duguay. "Installing nGenius was like turning on a light in the network. By illuminating our network with nGenius information appliances, we can view individual applications flows and their consumption of network resources historically and in real-time. We were able to identify the network issues important to the ERP initiative, as well as target any resource misuse or excess capacity."

American Tower installed NetScout's full suite of nGenius performance management applications and placed NetScout information appliances at key, high traffic points across the network. The nGenius Real-Time Monitor, nGenius Capacity Planner and nGenius Application Service Level Manager provide American Tower with the full range of network management capabilities:

    -- Pro-active, system-wide, real-time monitoring and management of network
      activity to assure uptime and performance through views of the network,
      individual application flows and end user behavior;
    -- Capacity planning to both optimize business services and assure
      infrastructure ROI through comprehensive device and application flow
      information;
    -- Monitoring and reporting of application service levels delivered to end
      users throughout the network.

Duguay added, "We can now manage the performance of our WAN more effectively to stay ahead of potential problems before they affect network performance. The nGenius suite also lets us plan upgrades more tightly without compromising the performance of our network."

Keeping a Watchful Eye on Network Performance

In addition to decreasing faults and leveraging the capacity within its existing infrastructure, American Tower is able to use nGenius' information to facilitate communications and business decisions between the company's IT organization and its various internal constituencies. Daily reports are delivered via the Web to internal business units. nGenius reports enable each business unit to see the demands placed on the network by its end users and to make business decisions based on the cost of network resources.

"Enterprises like American Tower, with large and complex networks, need the ability to see all activity taking place on the network and understand quickly, the impact of events that can lead to degradation or interruption in services levels," said Michael Szabados, senior vice president, Product Operations. "nGenius provides the necessary visibility to enable proactive performance management of network services. Unique nGenius information and intelligent analysis helps conserve valuable resources, save money and maintain high, flexible network performance for end user applications."
