NETSCOUT Announces New Family of WAN Probes for Cost-Effective Management of HQ and Remote Sites

New Line of Probes Allow Monitoring of Remote LAN Fast Ethernet and WAN Frame Relay Traffic from a Single Product

WESTFORD, Mass., March 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NetScout Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT) today announced a new family of nGenius® WAN/Frame Relay Probes that allow enterprises to extend management capabilities to T3/E3 circuits in their corporate data centers and to T1/E1 circuits at remote sites. These innovative new products offer optional Fast Ethernet monitoring or nGenius (R)Network Security Adaptor configurations supported in a single probe to cost effectively manage both LAN and WAN performance at remote offices, or to extend the security perimeter of their networks.

The new probes empower enterprises to implement management capabilities for their remote sites without having to add remote staff or management tools. By extending visibility into LAN and WAN traffic at remote locations, data center staff can rapidly respond to service degradations occurring within, or originating from other facilities -- without the costly expense of deploying third party maintenance personnel. In addition, they can better verify capacity needs that match the business use of the network to the bandwidth requirements of each location.

The probes can optionally be configured to simultaneously monitor the performance of Fast Ethernet LAN business traffic within remote facilities and the Frame Relay WAN traffic running between remote facilities and corporate data centers. Companies with significant remote operations, such as retailers, banks and insurance companies, have a strong need to assure availability and performance of networked services for their remote sites.

"Most large enterprises face the problem of controlling remote office resources with limited staff," stated Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. "NetScout's new WAN probes are designed to meet this problem head on, with the ability to monitor application traffic on both the WANs and the LANs of worldwide locations from a single central corporate site. With these probes, enterprises can standardize on a single performance management solution to get full control over IT resources and performance."

Alternatively, the nGenius Network Security Adaptor can be optionally added to any of the new base T3/E3 or T1/E1 WAN probes to extend the security of their WAN perimeter with visibility into incoming Internet traffic. This configuration helps enterprises optimize their network security investments by opening up deployment options at the edge, eliminating extra taps for WAN circuits and improving the quality of traffic being fed to their network-based intrusion detection systems.

nGenius probes offer high performance, real-time monitoring of all types of standard, Web-based and home-grown applications. They collect key performance metrics such as traffic and application utilization, conversations, error conditions, response times and data captures. nGenius probe information is displayed via NetScout's flagship performance management application, nGenius (R)Performance Manager 1.4. nGenius Performance Manager leverages the data made available through NetScout's patent-pending CDM(TM) technology to deliver real-time monitoring, troubleshooting, protocol analysis, capacity planning and historical reporting from a single, comprehensive solution.

The new probes are offered with flexible configurations to meet the unique needs of individual customers. Key features:

  • Configuration options for nGenius T3/E3 WAN Probe include one or two HSSI, DS3 or E3 Frame Relay monitoring interfaces.
  • Configuration options for nGenius T1/E1 WAN Probes include one or two serial T1/E1 ports or up to four T1 or E1 demarcation ports.
  • Value-added options for Fast Ethernet LAN monitoring or enhancing NIDS deployment flexibility via the nGenius Network Security Adaptor.
  • Unique views of entire Frame Relay trunks, with associated DLCIs simultaneously, to rapidly identify bandwidth abusers.

"With this new product line introduction, NetScout is extending its leadership position, offering the most flexible and cost-effective enterprise- wide WAN/LAN/Security performance management solutions available in the market today," said Jim Frey, vice president of marketing for NetScout. "By strategically deploying nGenius probes at remote sites, enterprises can assure that adequate resources are in place for their remote operations, and that networks and applications within those sites are optimized to assure that business services are performing to meet business needs."
