New nGenius Performance Manager 3.0 Provides Hospital System with Centralized Management for Safeguarding Vital Application Performance and Rapid Troubleshooting

WESTFORD, Mass., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NetScout Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTCT), a leading provider of network and application performance management solutions, today announced that The University of Kansas Hospital is using its nGenius(R) Solution to manage a wide-area network supporting up to 5,000 users across 14 remote outpatient locations. As part of the nGenius Solution, new nGenius Performance Manager 3.0 software gives The University of Kansas Hospital the granular visibility and centralized control needed to manage vital application traffic, rapidly troubleshoot problems before they impact network performance and eliminate unnecessary IT finger-pointing and expenses.

The University of Kansas Hospital is a state authority closely affiliated with the University of Kansas Medical Center. The hospital's doctors, nurses and support personnel rely on the network every day to access critical applications including patient medical records, billing and imaging systems for MRIs, CAT scans, radiology and cardiology systems. The network also supports scheduling and email programs for doctors and patients that are accessed simultaneously from multiple campus locations.

For The University of Kansas Hospital, it is essential that medical records, images and communications move quickly and securely across the network to meet their medical staff's often-urgent need for patient data. nGenius Performance Manager 3.0 helps the hospital's IT staff understand how long it takes for a user to request and receive information, the overall traffic load on the network and the mix of application traffic that is consuming the most network resources. The nGenius Solution also provides centralized visibility into performance issues on The University of Kansas Hospital's large wide-area network with comprehensive application and network information, allowing staff to rapidly troubleshoot bottlenecks.

Recently, The University of Kansas Hospital used the nGenius Solution to isolate the source of an application slowdown, overcoming "finger-pointing" and saving more than $15,000 in unwarranted IT vendor billing fees. "The centralized management and troubleshooting capabilities provided by the NetScout solution allowed us to quickly resolve an issue that had plagued internal groups for more than 60 days, providing an immediate, real dollar savings," said Michael Nix, assistant director of communication technologies at The University of Kansas Hospital. "In our medical environment where network performance can have an impact on the reaction time of healthcare staff, such solutions have immediate benefits. With the nGenius Solution, we have eliminated the cumbersome process of troubleshooting performance problems by physically traveling to each site to monitor network traffic. By improving IT productivity and reducing network problems, we have also been able to increase intangibles such as end-user satisfaction and IT service reliability."

The hospital also uses NetScout's nGenius Performance Manager NewsPaper reports as a trending tool to get a better view of overall network activity and gain insight into intermittent user complaints about slow connectivity and response time. The rich, web-based reports enable IT staff to identify the amount of traffic passing across the network at a particular moment in time, the exact number of broadcasts, how much of each individual type of traffic is taking place and cross reference the information with historical data reports to determine if the problem is a transient anomaly or a repetitive nuisance.

"The IT group at The University of Kansas Hospital has clearly demonstrated how organizations can achieve greater application and network reliability through centralized performance management, while maintaining efficient IT practices," said Jim Frey, vice president of marketing at NetScout Systems. "The nGenius System's capabilities to rapidly and remotely pinpoint problems make it ideal for organizations with mission-critical applications running on widely dispersed networks."
