NETSCOUT Delivers Application Session Analysis with Multi-Domain Visibility to Assure the User Experience

nGenius Enterprise Intelligence enables automated, faster and more efficient analysis of complex business service transactions correlated across multi-data center and cloud environments

WESTFORD, Mass., May 04, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- NetScout(R) Systems, Inc., today announced the extension of its Unified Service Delivery Management framework with the introduction of nGenius(R) Enterprise Intelligence, an integrated module for the nGenius Service Assurance Solution. nGenius Enterprise Intelligence closes the gap between network and application performance analysis enabling the comprehensive end-to-end visualization of user sessions to reveal the interdependencies that impact service quality and the downstream user experience. The module leverages rich intelligence from network traffic with granular hop-by-hop views into performance and latency as complex application traffic crosses multiple data centers and cloud environments to provide a truly unified perspective of user experience. Leveraging the real-time data mining capabilities of NetScout's recently announced Adaptive Session Intelligence(TM) (ASI) technology, nGenius Enterprise Intelligence automates, accelerates and simplifies the creation of a true representation of an end-to-end user data or voice session. This dramatically reduces analysis time, enabling the IT organization to quickly troubleshoot user sessions in context with business service utilization and performance.

Increasingly, many IT organizations are confronted with a dual set of challenges in assuring the quality of business services and the user experience. First, most business services are multi-tier, thus relying on a collection of applications, middleware and network elements to work together. In addition, most business services traverse global networks, crossing multiple network domains (hops) to many physical locations, such as distributed data centers or a hybrid interconnect of private and public cloud environments. As a result, management complexity increases as each service transaction traverses from one "hop" to the next, creating significant management challenges. Consequently, correlating performance measurements from all of these different tiers and domains is extremely difficult, and many IT organizations are struggling with a vast array of disconnected and incomprehensible metrics as a result of each operational group using an independent set of tools and data.

"As the complexity of applications and services grows and becomes more varied, network managers must shift to a broader view of end user experience and the interactions between the application and network as a whole," said Debra Curtis, research vice president at Gartner. "Consequently, IT operations staff needs to track business service transactions across the entire service delivery environment, from the user and across other relevant elements of the infrastructure to understand the interrelationships of infrastructure and applications."

First Enterprise Analysis Module Leveraging ASI Technology

nGenius Enterprise Intelligence combines application and network performance management capabilities to provide application, network and operations management staff with a unified, service-oriented view into a user session with correlated, hop-by-hop latency and performance metrics. nGenius Enterprise Intelligence is the first enterprise analysis module for the nGenius Service Assurance Solution to exclusively leverage NetScout's ASI technology. ASI technology enables faster, efficient and more accurate analysis of complex multi-tier business service transactions, correlated across a multi-domain service delivery environment. ASI technology performs granular, real-time data mining as traffic traverses the network. Real-time data mining eliminates the need for backend post capture analysis processing and enables the immediate retrieval of historical user session metrics on-demand.

Using adaptive application recognition, ASI technology constructs intelligent signatures of user sessions from continuously captured IP packets. nGenius Enterprise Intelligence then uses these user session signatures to dynamically track complex business service transactions across physical and virtual, multi-domain IP environments. nGenius Enterprise Intelligence correlates contextual ASI metadata from across multiple nGenius InfiniStream(R) appliances. This correlation enables the IT organization to quickly create a comprehensive view of a user's session, with transaction-level detail, for end-to-end analysis of complex business services. Consequently, the IT user can visualize a complete representation of a user's session, with interrelated transactions, up to 100 times faster than with traditional post-capture analysis methods, as well as realize up to a 100 times reduction in the data footprint impact on the network. As a result, the solution enables significantly greater performance at scale, eliminates the need for expensive back-end data collection and processing and dramatically speeds the time to analysis and problem resolution.

ASI technology is dynamic and fully customizable for individual business requirements, allowing for easy support for off-the-shelf and specialized business-specific applications and services. ASI-based application adapters provide application-specific intelligence to enable the generation of relevant metadata for business applications such as Oracle(R), SAP(R), web-based applications, VoIP, email, database and financial applications, as well as a wide range of key enabling protocols.

Part of a Unified Solution

As a tightly integrated module for the nGenius Service Assurance Solution, nGenius Enterprise Intelligence complements the nGenius Service Delivery Manager by providing the deep-dive application performance management capabilities needed for rapid problem resolution. Providing IT organizations with a high level business service dashboard, nGenius Service Delivery Manager continuously monitors and analyzes application and service traffic flowing across multiple points of the network to provide unified views of service health and user experience. Using high definition network-based anomaly detection, nGenius Service Delivery Manager provides Intelligent Early Warning notifications to automate the identification of deviations and performance anomalies in user, network, server and application usage and behavior. Using a common set of underlying data, IT users then can contextually progress from a business service status view into a specific user session within nGenius Enterprise Intelligence to see specific transactions between application and network tiers. This unified service-oriented workflow greatly simplifies and automates the task of managing application and network performance for highly complex, multi-location service delivery environments, thus improving operational efficiency and speeding time to knowledge.

"The introduction of nGenius Enterprise Intelligence is a significant step forward in addressing the challenges of identifying inter-domain performance problems. This new analysis module will help IT organizations accelerate troubleshooting service delivery problems across distributed service delivery architectures, such as cloud-based services, enterprise data centers, and branch and remote offices," said Steven Shalita, vice president, marketing at NetScout. "As NetScout continues to drive the transformation of performance management, our innovative ASI technology will enable us to deliver the scale, performance and capacity needed to enable IT organizations to identify when and where performance and latency issues exist, and what actions are necessary to improve service flow, business outcomes and better manage the user experience."

Availability

nGenius Enterprise Intelligence is currently in field trials, and general availability is expected in July 2011 with enterprise or workgroup licensed versions. The module leverages ASI metrics from nGenius InfiniStream appliances and is tightly integrated with nGenius Service Delivery Manager, nGenius Performance Manager, and Sniffer(R) Analysis modules. NetScout will be demonstrating nGenius Enterprise Intelligence at Interop Las Vegas 2011 (booth number 1250) from May 10 through May 12, 2011.
